Stanislav Grof, an outstanding psychologist of our time, discovered that our life crises, like the process of childbirth, follow the model of "death-rebirth". Grof divided these experiences into four types, which he called "basic perinatal matrices." In the process of therapy, he helped his clients touch the immeasurable transpersonal areas of our consciousness — the areas of action of archetypes and myths. Those spaces where we can experience unity with the world.
"We were all born anatomically, but not emotionally. And so we don't seem to fully live in this world, stuck in the memories of birth..."

Stanislav Grof is a Czech-American psychologist and psychiatrist, MD, co-founder of transpersonal psychology, one of the pioneers in the study of altered states of consciousness, and the creator of the holotropic breathwork method. Perinatal matrices by Grof: I. Refers to the static presence of the embryo in the mother's womb, which represents the embryo's entire world. If this stage of ontogenesis was experienced without problems, then its content will be filled with a sense of lightness, serenity, identification with aquatic life forms, and being in space. II. Grof summarized this matrix as " cosmic absorption and no exit." It corresponds to the first phase of labor, that is, contractions. Regressive therapeutic experiences may include feelings of claustrophobia, fear, resentment, anger, helplessness, betrayal, or worthlessness. It is possible to identify with the imprisoned archetypal figures associated with eternal damnation. III. Grof called it a phase of struggle between death and rebirth. This phase corresponds to the second phase of labor, in which the uterus continues to contract, but the cervix is already open and the fetus can gradually pass through the birth canal. Passing through the birth canal becomes the first experience for a child to consciously overcome the path. Grof called it the phase of experiencing death and rebirth. This phase refers directly to birth and the first minutes and hours after it.
